24 Hours in… London
When Accor Hotels wrote me about their 24 Hours In… competition, I knew that I couldn’t miss out on this one.
The premise is simple: describe how you would spend 24 hours in your favourite city.
If you have been a loyal reader of Travellous World (thank you for that!), or maybe just had a look around on the homepage, you probably have guessed that my favourite city is… London. The city that stole my heart five years ago and will probably never let me go.
Thinkable scenarios aplenty when it comes to what to do in London. But if I have to pick, this would be my choice of preference:
8AM – Jog along Southbank
Getting a bit of exercise is a great way to start your day. It can make you feel energized, accomplished and motivated for the hours ahead. On top of that, doing the stretch from Big Ben to Tower Bridge will lead you along some of London’s most famous landmarks, such as the London Eye, St Paul’s Cathedral and the Globe Theatre.
9AM Have breakfast in Sky Garden
When you feel all awake and energized after your workout, take things up higher in the Sky Garden. The Darwin Restaurant on the 36st floor of 20 Fenchurch Street is open for breakfast each day from 7am-10:30am. What makes it so special are the stunning views of London all around you.
10:30AM Visit the London highlights
What is a day in London without having visited the highlights such as Trafalgar Square, Buckingham Palace and the West End? While those areas are best to visit on foot, try to hop on a ‘Boris Bike‘ to explore the Royal Parks.
2PM – Lunch time!
You must have built up quite an appetite after all that sightseeing. Get ready to treat your taste buds with cuisine from all over the world offered in Camden. You might even score some nice souvenirs at one of Camden’s markets.
3PM – Take a walk along the Regent’s Canal
One of my personal favourites is the walk along the canal from Camden to Paddington. Here you can find lovely narrow boats, grand mansions and beautiful views from the top of Primrose Hill.
4:30PM – Go on a ‘Pretty House’ hunt in Notting Hill
From Paddington it is only a short journey to Notting Hill. On Saturday, you can find the famous vintage market here. However, my recommendation would be to challenge yourself to a ‘pretty house’ photography hunt in this area. Believe me, it’s worth it!
5:00PM – Coffee time!
London is a city where they drink more coffee than tea – true story! So just before dinner time, it would be wise to have a cuppa. Instead of visiting one of the many coffee shop chains around town, I would recommend to try one of the independent ones. They might even create some fancy coffee art for you, like Stir Coffee in Brixton does.
6:30PM – Go for Dinner in Neal’s Yard
Head back into town and enter this little gem in Seven Dials. Neal’s Yard is a little alleyway that opens into a courtyard. Here you can escape the hustle and bustle of the main streets, and enjoy dinner in one of its restaurants.
8:00PM – Watch the sunset in Greenwich Park
Settle down in Greenwich for a sunset spectacle. Right on top in Greenwich Park you will find the meridian line, as well as great views of the Royal Naval College, Canary Wharf and the City.
10:00PM – Chill out in Frank’s Cafe
If it’s summer, definitely head up to Frank’s Cafe in Peckham. This bar on top of a multi-story car park is a great location for some drinks and to see London from a bird’s eye perspective.
If it’s winter, warm up with a beer or two in one of London’s pubs. There is an indefinite number to choose from. What about this flower-y one in Notting Hill?
7AM – Have breakfast at the Cereal Killer Cafe
Good morning sunshine! It is almost time to go home. But not before you have had a ‘proper’ breakfast. Find your inner 90’s kid (or adult?) and enter the world of the Cereal Killer Cafe. Here, you can find almost all British and American cereals you could wish for – ranging from Disney’s Frozen to pop tarts. Check out the 80’s and 90’s VHS, poster and toys collection while you’re enjoying your ‘highly nutritious’ meal. The Cereal Killer Cafe can be found in Brick Lane and in Camden.
