Kingston – Christmas in London

Christmas in London – Kingston Upon Thames

Last year we told you all the ins and outs about Christmas in Central London. From the mulled wine at London Bridge Christmas Market, to iceskating at Somerset House to Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park.

This year, we want to broaden the borders a bit and take you on a festive trip to markets and events a bit further out of Central London. Last week we reported on Enchanted Woodland in Syon Park, and this week we will visit South-West London. Kingston Upon Thames to be a bit more exact.

Kingston is situated 10 miles (16 kilometers) from Charing Cross, near Richmond and Wimbledon. It is a lovely ancient market town, where Saxon kings used to be crowned. But since 1965 Kingston is part of Greater London.

You still really feel this town-like vibe, especially when you enter Market Place with the Old Town Hall in the centre of it all. That is now home to this lovely shop where they sell arts and crafts created by local artists.

In the summer and on crisp winter days alike it is wonderful to walk along the Thames, towards Bushy Park all the way to famous Hampton Court Palace.

This part of London is also great for shopping, with a great selection of high street shops on Clarence Street and in the Bentall Centre. Then, for the freshest of produce, visit the market on Ancient Market Place – open Monday to Saturday.

Old and new really come together in Kingston with many shops and boutiques based in old half-timbered buildings.

However, if you are looking for a traditional holiday feeling, Kingston Christmas Market is the place to be. This German-style Christmas market takes place every year between the end of November and 31st December.

Alpine chalets with Christmas souvenirs, arts and crafts, holiday food and mulled wine can be found througout the town during this time of year. So bring a full wallet if you are visiting Kingston, because it will be hard not to buy your next Christmas gift here.
